Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, October 1: The design of the Automated Fingerprint Processing Device, developed by researchers at MGM University to enhance unclear and partial fingerprints at crime scenes, has been granted a patent by the Government of India’s Patent Office. The research was conducted by Dr. Mohammed Khaja Moinuddin Siddiqui, Head of the Department of Forensic Science; Assistant Professor Gaurav Varade; and Assistant Professor Prashant Pattekar.
Fingerprints are considered crucial physical evidence in criminal investigations. However, developing clear impressions from fingerprints contaminated with dust, blood or other substances, as well as from partial impressions, remains a significant challenge for investigating agencies. To address this issue, the researchers developed the concept and design of an automated fingerprint processing device.
Currently, fingerprint development involves techniques such as cyanoacrylate fuming, powder dusting and various chemical processes, often requiring separate equipment. These methods can be time-consuming and demand considerable manpower and resources. The newly designed device aims to facilitate the development of unclear or partial fingerprints directly at crime scenes.
The device is portable and battery-operated, potentially enabling fingerprint processing at the scene before evidence is transported to a laboratory. Its automated operation is expected to reduce human intervention and help minimise the risk of evidence tampering.
According to the researchers, while conventional fingerprint development methods may take several hours, the device aims to complete the process within minutes. It has also been designed with the objective of obtaining high-resolution fingerprint images.
The research has the potential to provide useful technology to investigative agencies such as the Maharashtra Police, the Crime Investigation Department (CID), the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), fingerprint bureaus and forensic science laboratories. The development is also significant for students and researchers in the field of forensic science.
Congratulating the researchers on this achievement, Prof. Dr. Unnat P. Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks; Shri Ankushrao Kadam, Chancellor; Prof. Dr. Vilas Sapkal, Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Ashish Gadekar, Registrar; and Dr. Prapti Deshmukh, Dean of MGM University, extended their best wishes for the team’s future endeavours.
